Norwegian prepositions: How to use “til” and “for” + the infinitive?

If you want to learn Norwegian, knowing how to use prepositions is essential. In this lesson, we will discuss how to use for and til + the infinitive.

for + the infinitive

While “for å” expresses an intention or a purpose, “til å” refers to something used as a tool or a means to an end. Let us look at some examples with “for + the infinitive”, where there is a clear “why” when stating the reason for doing something:

Jeg lærer norsk for å søke på jobber i Norge.

I learn Norwegian to apply for jobs in Norway.

Han må hjem for å gjøre lekser.

He has to go home to do homework.

We use “for å” when there is a clear goal in mind, an obvious reason why something is done.

When we use “for å,” this tells us the reason for doing something. This is similar to saying “in order to….” in English. Here you can ask a direct “hvorfor””why”.

Hvorfor lærer du norsk?

Why are you learning Norwegian?

Jeg lærer norsk for å søke på jobber i Norge.

I learn Norwegian to apply for jobs in Norway.

Hvorfor må han hjem?

Why does he have to go home?

Han må hjem for å gjøre lekser.

He has to go home to do homework.

til + the infinitive

There is no clear intention with “til + the infinitive ” only a movement toward a goal. “Til å…” refers to something used as a tool or a means to an end. For example:

Hun bruker datamaskinen til å se på nyhetene.

She uses the computer to watch the news.

Jeg bruker mobiltelefonen min til å logge meg inn i nettbanken.

I use my mobile phone to log into the internet bank.
