How to use “om” and “i” + Season in Norwegian

“om” + season

When discussing what you usually do in a season, you will use “om.”

Let us look at how to pronounce the seasons in Norwegian:

høst (autumn)
høsten (the autumn)

vinter (winter)
vinteren (the winter)

vår (spring)
våren (the spring)

sommer (summer)
sommeren (the summer)

Examples:
Hva liker du å gjøre om sommeren?

What do you like to do in the summer?

Hvordan er været om vinteren i Stavanger?

How is the weather in the winter in Stavanger?

Drar du ofte på hytten om sommeren?

Do you often go to the cabin in the summer?

Han liker å gå på ski om vinteren.

He likes to go skiing in the winter.

“i” + season

When you talk about what you did last season or the following season, you will use “i.” So if you want to say, “last winter it was cold,” you will say, “i vinter var det kaldt.”

If you say you’re going on vacation to Spain this winter, you say, “I vinter skal jeg på ferie til Spania.”

Examples:

Hva skal du gjøre i vinter?

What are you going to do in the upcoming winter?

Hvordan var været der i vinter?

How was the weather there in the last winter?

I høst skal jeg starte å lære meg kinesisk.

In the upcoming autumn I will start to learn Chinese.

I sommer pusset jeg opp hytten min.

In the last summer I redecorated my cabin.
