Norwegian Subject and Object Pronouns

“Personlig pronomen” (Personal pronouns) represent people, animals, places, and things and can be classified as subject or object.

1 Subject form

jeg  (I)

du (you)

han (he)

hun (she)

den (it)

det (it)

vi (we)

dere (you)

de (they)

Examples:

Jeg drikker vann. (I drink water.)

Du drikker vann. (You drink water.)

Han drikker vann. (He drinks water.)

Hun drikker vann. (She drinks water.)

Den drikker vann. (It drinks water.)

Det drikker vann. (It drinks water.).

Vi drikker vann. (We drink water.)

Dere drikker vann. (You –plural- drink water.)

De drikker vann. (They drink water.)

The common pronouns used for human beings in Norwegian are either han (“he”) or hun (“she”).

For example:

Håkon studerer økonomi. (Håkon is studying economy.)

Han er ferdig med studiene om to år. (He is finishing his studies in two years. )

Elise bor i Bergen. (Elise lives in Bergen.)

Hun flytter til Oslo i juli. (She moves to Oslo in July.)

“Den” and “det” represent “it.” Which one to use is based on the gender of the nouns. For masculine nouns and feminine nouns, you use “den.”

Example:

Har du sett mobiltelefonen min? (Have you seen my mobile phone?)

Den ligger der. (It is there.)

For intetkjønn (neuter nouns) you use “det.”

Example:

Når går toget? (When is the train leaving?)

Det går kvart over åtte. (It leaves at a quarter past eight.)

Object form

We use the object form when the pronoun is the object in the sentence.

meg (me)

deg (you)

ham (him)

henne (her)

den (it)

det (it)

oss (us)

dere (you – plural)

dem (them)

Examples:

Håkon vasker meg. (Håkon washes me.)

Håkon vasker deg. (Håkon washes you.)

Håkon vasker ham. (Håkon washes him.)

Håkon vasker henne. (Håkon washes her.)

Håkon vasker den. (Håkon washes it.)

Håkon vasker det. (Håkon washes it.)

Håkon vasker oss. (Håkon washes us.)

Håkon vasker dere. (Håkon washes you –plural-.)

Håkon vasker dem. (Håkon washes them.)

The pronoun is also used after a preposition.

Example:

Elise snakker med Håkon. (Elise is talking with Håkon.)

Subject form:

Hun snakker med Håkon. (She is talking with Håkon.)

Object form:

Elise snakker med ham. (Elise is talking with him.)
