Language Training for Employees at Maaemo – Enhancing Guest Experience at a Michelin Three-Star Restaurant

Maaemo, located in the heart of Oslo, is one of Scandinavia’s most prestigious dining establishments and holds the rare distinction of three Michelin stars. Known for its visionary take on Nordic cuisine and commitment to excellence, Maaemo attracts an international clientele from all corners of the world—including a growing number of guests from China.

To further elevate the guest experience and support their globally diverse team, Maaemo partnered with NLS Norwegian Language School to offer a specialized Chinese language course for its employees. The purpose of the training was to equip front-of-house staff and key team members with essential Mandarin Chinese communication skills that could be used in guest interactions, service explanations, and cultural hospitality.

The course focused on practical language tailored to the fine dining environment, including how to greet guests, describe ingredients and preparation methods, explain the tasting menu, respond to common guest questions, and accommodate special dietary needs—all in Mandarin Chinese. Cultural elements such as etiquette, expectations, and respectful forms of address were also included to ensure refined and culturally aware service.

Lessons were taught by experienced instructors with a background in language training for the hospitality industry. The instruction was immersive, interactive, and adapted to the pace and service demands of a Michelin-starred restaurant.
