How to Form the Genitive in Norwegian

In Norwegian, the genitive, which is the noun used mainly to show possession, is made by adding an “s” to the end of the singular or plural form of a noun that can be indefinite or definite.

 

Indefinite singular

 

en fars holdning

a father’s attitude

 

en voksens holdning 

an adult’s attitude

 

 

Definite singular

 

farens holdning

the father’s attitude

 

den voksnes holdning

the adult’s attitude

 

 

Indefinite plural

 

fedres holdning

fathers’ attitude

 

voksnes holdning 

adults’ attitude

 

 

Definite plural

 

fedrenes holdning

the fathers’ attitude
